Monterey FLOW: Links
Public Citizen is a nationwide consumer advocacy
group whose "Water for All" campaign
advocates responsible management of water resources
around the U.S.
Cal-Am is owned by RWE Aktiengesellschaft,the
third largest for-profit water provider in the
world. The corporation acquired American Water
Works in 2002, which includes the Monterey Peninsula
water distribution system. The corporation reports
annual sales of $60 billion worldwide. It is the
largest for-profit water company in the United
States.
This site provides an overview of the Carmel River
which is the source of most of the water used
by the Monterey Peninsula.
Order 95-10 covers the decision by the State Water
Resources Control Board to require Cal-Am to secure
new sources of water to replace the water the
company. A good synopsis can be found on page
five of this document.
Felton recently passed a bond measure to purchase
its water system from Cal-Am.
(CPUC)
The CPUC is the state agency that regulates privately
owned water companies. The agency is responsible
for assuring California utility customers have
safe and reliable utility services, protecting
utility customers from fraud and promoting the
health of California economy.
(ORA)
The Office of Ratepayer Advocates is part of the
CPUC and represents the interests of all public
utility customers in CPUC proceedings to ensure
the lowest possible rate for utilities like water
and power. The ORA has come out in support of
allowing Felton residents to buy the water district
from Cal-Am.
(Kentucky)
Bluegrass FLOW is a citizen's group in Lexington
that is working to buy back that city's water
system from Kentucky American, a sister company
to Cal-Am and a subsidiary of the German-based
RWE Aktiengesellschaft corporation. RWE and Kentucky
American spent an estimated $3 million fighting
citizen efforts to establish local ownership of
the water utility.
CCCOS is a coalition of citizens and groups working
to regain local ownership of their water utility
from OMI-Thames, a Great Britain-based subsidiary
of RWE Aktiengesellschaft Corporation, which also
owns Cal-Am.
Montara residents purchased their water system
from Cal-Am. You can check out the great work
